Be sure to buckle up and strap in August 20th and 21st for the city of Chicago is holding the 58th annual Chicago Air and Water Show! Every year since 1959 top civilian and military pilots take to the air and water for the greatest daredevil feats and wonders backdropped by the gorgeous skyline of Chicago. Nearly 2 million people flock to this event every year, making it the largest FREE admission air and water exhibition of this caliber in the United States.
And what a caliber it is— from the headliners to the opening acts! Headlining this year will feature The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds (whose team is comprised of 120 personnel!) and a display of their raw, whining power. Don't miss the U.S. Parachute Team Golden Knights— these folks jump out of an aircraft at nearly 12,500 feet above the earth and race towards the surface at speeds exceeding 120 MPH! And don't miss the U.S. Navy Parachute Team Leap Frog. A typical performance consists of fourteen jumpers, all who during free-fall reach speeds of 120 MPH and can accelerate up to 180MPH!
Getting to the airshow is a piece of cake. Chicago offers an extensive public transportation network that'll get you there in no time. Additionally, there's numerous parking garages in the area- my recommendation, check out Millennium Parking. They offer a $35 all day package which includes a free shuttle to the beach! Or maybe you're interested in getting a bit of a tour of the city of Chicago via bike? Divvy Bike will be offering valet bike services at select stations to guarantee you a spot to dock your bike. Be sure to grab a 24 hour pass and ride away!
Oh yea, Be sure to check out this awesome list of aviator slang— it'll get you speaking like a military pilot in no time!
